Human- being engineering has always facinated me - the way our brains come up with innovations that are both brilliant and hilariously simple. At some point in history, during a very hot day, someone looked at a stick and a piece of fabric and thought, “What if...?” And just like that, the folding fan was born: minimalistic, linear, clever, and perfectly capable of creating a breeze with nothing more than a graceful back- and - forth wiggle. Of course, humans didn’t stop there. We turned the fan into an art form - beautifying it, tying it to culture, even creating dances around it. That level of creativity always makes me proud to be part of this species. With Sensu, I wanted to take that same playful ingenuity and translate it into architecture. By using a central point and allowing the design to “Fold out” across the site, we mimicked the beloved fan’s simple magic. Even with a steep hillside, steps, constraints, and limited space, we managed to open it up into a spread, comfortable architecural form - just like unfolding a fan to catch the perfect breeze. Turns out, this old innovatin still works... especially in house form.
